The Marpac SleepMate 580a is similar to the previously reviewed Marpac Sleepmate 980a. The only difference is the SleepMate 580a is single speed as opposed to SleepMate 980a which is dual speed. This basically means that aside from $9 price difference, the only real difference is the ability to change the sound speed. If you go with the 580a, it’s speed is equivalent to that of the SleepMate 980a’s high speed.
Since all other specs are generally the same with the 980a model, we’ll go straight to our recommendation.
Recommendation
If you’re choosing between the Marpac SleepMate 980a vs this SleepMate 580a, we would definitively just go with the higher model. The $9 price difference doesn’t justify the omission of speed settings. Even if you feel you won’t have any need to a slower speed setting, it’s better to have the option available just in case you find the SeatMate 580a’s current setting too loud.

Not only was this product unhelpful, but there was no way to adjust the noise level. One size fits all I guess – just didn’t work for me.
My parents kept one of these in my room when I was very young, and as an adult, I stumbled across one online. It works just as well as I remembered. Make sure to put in in the middle of the room or at least across the room from yourself for best results. Play with the tone and volume to cover up whatever you’re trying to cover. I’ll have one of these in my room forever!
